The advantages of the flange on nuts are:

  • better distribution of the load on the thread;
  • smaller wedge effect of the load on the thread (a factor that causes the nut to expand and, therefore, reduces the resistance section on the thread);
  • a reduction in the specific pressure exerted by the load on the supporting surface;
  • a self-locking effect due to the micrometric yielding of the flange. This deformation also produces radial components which tend to tighten the nut.

ELASTIC

The advantages of the self-locking flange on nuts (in addition to those advantages already mentioned for flanged nuts) are:

  • a small change of recovery in the case of loosening as a result of thermal expansion or by settlement.

KNURLED

DIN EN 1661 (DIN 6923)
The “security device” of the knurled nut is made up of teeth whose rake angle shape has been suitably designed to counteract any unscrewing effect caused, generally, by vibration.
The knurled nut is the only one that requires an unscrewing force that is significantly greater than the initial screwing force.
